Nobelprijs Lezing 2018

Elk jaar kort na de bekendmaking van de Nobelprijs voor de natuurkunde /scheikunde een lezing over de natuurkunde/scheikunde achter de prijs.
We willen hier mee graag inspelen op de actualiteit van het wetenschappelijke onderzoek dat deze prijs verdient.

De Nobelprijs voor Natuurkunde is dit jaar toegekend aan Arthur Ashkin, Gérard Mourou en Donna Strickland voor hun onderzoek naar lasers.

 

This year, the Nobel Committee has awarded in Physics two breakthrough inventions in laser physics. The first, optical tweezers, allows scientist and engineers to employ light to manipulate everything from molecules to living cells. These optical tweezers can be compared to fingers for the microscopic world enabling us for example to pull apart DNA, probe the mechanics of life and study fundamental interactions in physics, chemistry and engineering.

The second breakthrough, chirped pulse amplification, led to more precise and more powerful lasers. These super-high power light sources open the door for cutting-edge applications as diverse as attosecond time-resolved dynamics of atoms and molecules and laser eye surgery.

Among the nominees, Donna Strickland becomes the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in physics in 55 years after Marie Curie in 1903 and Maria Goeppert Mayer in 1963.

In this lecture, we will provide a brief history of these discoveries in the context of Optical physics (16:00 – 16:45). We will discuss their impacts on science and society. We will also give you a few messages to take home to your students (16:50 – 17:35).

 

Dr. Aurèle J.L. ADAM will provide this lecture

Dr. Adam is an assistant professor at the Delft University of Technology. He is a member of the Optics Group, which is active for more than 70 years being the oldest research group in the University. His current line of research is light manipulation. His work has large impact in the Hight Tech sector. He teaches several courses at Bachelor and Master level for the Applied Science Faculty, focusing in Wave and Optics. He is also taking part of outreach European projects such as Phablabs4.0 and Photonics4all both promoting photonics and Light to the young audience.
